about

This is the first song where the gospel of my youth showed up again. Growing up in the Bible Belt you are raised with this very institutionalized set of rules. Community and Church provide all of these men as role models and they constantly fail at keeping these rules but it's never really talked about openly. So when I left home I didn't really have a road map to becoming an adult. I felt like I had never really seen much integrity and that was the most important thing to me. I met Ronnie in Dallas. He was from a totally different world than me but was also from Memphis. He had lost his father and spent most of his teens on tour in a scene ripe with hypocrisy. I think subconsciously we bonded by this need to learn how to grow up with integrity and we set down a path of indulging our vanity as far as that would take us, whether that meant death or becoming men.

lyrics

I was born to ride free
That's how it's gotta be
Well you can tell by the way i dress
My soul is quite a mess
And you can tell by the way I do my hair
That all the pretty girls stare

I was born to ride free
That's how it's gotta be
It's a little bit hard I confess
To get in your heart and get in your dress
But I deserve everything you are
I was born to be a star

I'll take you down by the river child
I'll make you scream and I'll drive you wild
Cause I'm a pill popping Jesus
I can set you free
I know you've got the money honey
So just follow me down

I was born to ride free
That's how it's gotta be
Well you can call me evil
Might think I'm the seventh son
But you can meet me at the gates of heaven
Cause I'm the chosen one
